If you have oily skin, keep reading to learn all about our top five products to help control oil!
Oily skin is caused by several factors. Some have to do with genetics – some people simply produce more sebum than others. Oily skin can also be caused by overdrying your skin (washing too frequently, using products that are too harsh, etc.), so your skin compensates by producing even more oil. Your age also plays a factor, as your skin naturally produces less sebum. Your skin also changes with the season and the climate; in summer or in hot, humid areas, people tend to have oilier skin, and in the winter people have drier skin.
So what can you do to even out the oil levels of your skin? Use HD Soap products of course! We have listed these products in the order of how you should use them:
1. From Scratch Sugar Scrub
You need to exfoliate your skin at least once per week (oily skin can be exfoliated more often). This should be the very first step in your skincare routine, because it will expose the new, fresh skin and allow your skin to absorb the products you are about to put on to help control the oil. Exfoliating helps keep your oily skin from causing pimples or blackheads, and it keeps your pores from getting clogged. Our best-selling scrub is our Sweet Citrus! (If you prefer a scrub without oil, check out our Pumice Whipped Scrub or our Charcoal Whipped Scrub.)
2. Activated Charcoal Mask
Once a week, you need to do an additional detox to help your skin oils stay balanced. After you exfoliate, try using one of our Dry Masks by simply adding your favorite liquid to create a texture you can spread on your face. Simply use warm water to wash off after about 15-20 minutes. This will help remove the bad oils without stripping your skin of the good oils. Our best-selling mask is our Activated Charcoal; this is a great choice to help clear up blemished skin, which is common for those who struggle with excess oil.
3. Activated Charcoal From Scratch Soap
Morning and night, make sure you are washing your face – but do NOT wash more than that. Some people think that washing often helps with the oil, but the opposite problem occurs. The more you wash and strip your skin of its natural oils, the more oil your body is going to produce (and produce too much) which only furthers the endless battle with oil. Using a soap that contains clay, as our Activated Charcoal does, can make a huge difference with controlling sebum production. If that is still too drying, try one of our other clay soaps like our Bergamot or Peppermint. You can also rotate soaps with the Activated Charcoal if you already have a favorite that you enjoy for your face.
4. Sage & Tea Tree Toner
Tea tree oil is an excellent essential oil to help control oil, and toning is important for every skin type. You can simply spritz it on after you wash your face, or use a cotton pad or ball to apply to your skin. This is another part of your routine that you need to do morning and night. (For an added bonus, add in our Cleansing Toner BEFORE you use the Sage & Tea Tree for some amazing astringent benefits and deeper cleansing.)
5. Orange & Olive Oil Balm
This is definitely NOT a step to miss – which is a common tendency with oily skin. However, as we stated above, if you are not adding the right kind of moisture into your skin, it will go into “emergency mode” and produce more oil than you want. If you want to balance out your oils, this is probably the key product to do it with! Choose from our original Orange & Olive Oil Balm or our Orange & Olive Oil Balm with Vitamin C. (For lighter coverage, try using our Hair Serum as your moisturizer!). Make sure you moisturize morning and night as the final step in your skincare routine.
