Today we’re learning all about cedarwood essential oil from Christine, certified aromatherapist and creator of all things HD Soap!
Cedarwood essential oil is my favorite of the “woodsy” essential oils. It has a calming effect, and its pleasant aroma makes it a great base in perfumes. For me, this essential oil has been a welcome scent change in the HD Soap kitchen. I was making a fresh batch of our Hair Serum and realized that I had forgotten how lovely the scent is; it reminded me of an impromptu visit to Tahquamenon Falls. As we wandered on the trails, there were tall cedar trees all around us. I love how scent can always transport us to fond memories like family vacations.
Where does cedarwood essential oil come from?
Cedar and juniper trees; it comes from all parts of the plant and is most commonly extracted by steam distillation or carbon distillation
What does it smell like?
A calming, woodsy scent with notes of resin, reminiscent of a walk in a forest
Why choose cedarwood essential oil?
In haircare?
Cedarwood essential oil is believed to promote healthy hair growth, which is why we chose it for our Hair Serum! It can alleviate a dry and itchy scalp. We use our Hair Serum to boost our oldest daughter’s hair masks.
In skincare?
Say goodbye to bugs! Cedarwood is often a component in creams and sprays to deter bugs. It was a no-brainer to include it in our “bug” blend. You can enjoy the calming scent of cedarwood in our Bug Spray or Bug Bar anytime.
I’m excited to report we are working on a soap! We are going to soon be testing a new and improved version of our Cedar & Sandalwood From Scratch Soap! If all goes well, you will be able to enjoy this new and improved version in summer 2021!
What are the aromatic benefits of diffusing cedarwood?
Cedarwood has amazing calming and grounding effects on the mind and body. I like this choice of essential oils as a scent to diffuse during the winter months when we all get a little bit of cabin fever! Because I love this oil so much, we are going to offer it online for a limited time!
What should we watch out for when using cedarwood essential oil?
Cedarwood is relatively safe for using and diffusing. Please do not use it if you have an allergy to cedar. Cedarwood is also safe to use around pets, but you would not want them to ingest it.
