Apricots are not just good food – the oil from their kernels is amazing for your skin, too!
The kernels, or pits, of apricots are highly concentrated (40-50%!) in oil, and it is similar to peach or almond oil. It is also packed full of antioxidants and vitamins like E and K. It also contains a nutrient you might not be familiar with: amygdalin. Amygdalin is found in many seed-bearing fruits, but apricot seed kernels are among the highest! It pairs with other enzymes in the pit for even more powerful nutrients. The amygdalin in the apricot kernel actually resembles a complex B vitamin.
Apricot kernel oil has been used for thousands of years in traditional Chinese medicines. Some of the common uses include:
- Moisturizing the skin
- Relieving breakouts
- Hair protection and strengthening
Because apricot kernel oil is an emollient (meaning it moisturizes and softens the skin) many people use it on their dry skin, rosacea, psoriasis, or eczema. It is great for treating inflammatory skin issues and can help relieve dry, red, scaly patches of skin.
Another skin condition connected to inflammation are breakouts. Sebum builds up in the glands and causes inflammation and zits. Apricot kernel oil is known to reduce this buildup, thereby addressing both the inflammation and the breakout!
When used on the hair and scalp, apricot kernel oil may help reinforce healthy hair follicles and even strengthen the strands of the hair themselves. It may even help reduce the buildup of chemicals on the scalp that can lead to hair loss or slow hair growth. Some people even rub the oil directly into their scalp to fight itchy flakes.
Apricot kernel oil is packed with antioxidants, which makes it a great candidate to try if younger-looking skin is your goal! It is frequently used to minimize signs of aging, such as age spots, fine lines and wrinkles, and to tone and tighten the skin.
